Damacaprone Absorbable Suture
Damacaprone absorbable suture is a different suture type used in operations and wounds. All types of sutures can be used for soft tissue repair in general, including both cardiovascular and neurological procedures.
- Silk: Braided natural stitch. Type of absorbable suture.
- Polyester (Ethibond): Braided synthetic suture.
Polyglactin 910 (Vicryl)
It is called Polyglactin 910 because it has a 90/10 glycolic acid/lactic acid ratio. It is multifilament. The water repellent property of lactic acid reduces the tension power loss and causes rapid absorption of the suture. It is one of the absorbable suture types and destroyed by hydrolysis. It is completely absorbed in 56-70 days, but loses its tensile strength in 28-35 days.
If it stays on the skin for more than 7 days, it causes irritation. It retains 60% of its tensile strength on the 14th day after suturing. Different than Damacaprone absorbable suture Vicryl is generally used for approximation of soft tissue and ligation of vessels.
Suturing Steps
- The patient is informed about the procedure to be performed and permission is obtained.
- The materials like Damacaprone absorbable suture to be used are checked.
- Appropriate position is given to the patient.
- Sterile materials to be used are opened appropriately.
- The wound is cleaned of foreign substances before applying any absorbable sutures
- A sterile tampon folded in four layers is attached to the flat clamp and an antiseptic is poured on it.
- Wound edges are cleaned in circles that expand from inside to outside.
- The perforated sterile dressing is covered around the wound.
- The lid of the anesthetic substance is opened.
- The anesthetic substance is drawn into the injector.
Wound Care in Sutures
- Anesthetic agent is applied to the wound edge.
- The needle of the Damacaprone absorbable suture material is placed in the porthole by holding its 2/3 part.
- The wound edge is held with forceps.
- The needle is inserted at an equal distance from the wound edges and in such a way that it takes all the layers of the skin.
- The ends of the collet are placed on both sides of the point where the needle comes out. This application might change depending on the absrobable suture material.
- The skin is pushed back with the forceps and the needle is taken out.
- The needle is held from the outside of the skin with a porthole.
- With the movement of the wrist, it is removed from the skin by rotating the needle in accordance with the curve of the wrist, and the needle is pulled until 2-3 cm of thread is left outside at the point where sewing is started.
- By holding the Damacaprone absorbable suture thread from the long side of the thread with one hand, it is wrapped around the end of the loop twice.
- By catching the free end on the other side, the rope is pulled to the opposite side and the rope at the end of the rope is pulled to the side of the long rope.
Removing The Knot
- By removing the knot from the wound edges as much as possible, it is ensured that the knot sits at the point where the thread enters the skin.
- The knot is compressed so that there is no gap between the wound edges and the wound edges turn outward slightly.
- When the knot is seated, the portegu is loosened and the end of the rope is released.
- Both threads are cut with scissors so that 5-7 mm thread remains after the knot.
- Depending on the size of the wound, a sufficient numbers of Damacaprone absorbable suture are placed, not more than 1 cm.
- After the suturing process is finished, the wound is cleaned again with an antiseptic substance.
- The wound is covered with a sterile tampon and fixed with the help of a plaster.
- The material used is collected appropriately.
- All waste is safely disposed of in the appropriate waste bin.
- Gloves are removed and thrown into the appropriate waste bin.
- Hands are washed.
- The operation is recorded.
Points You Have to be Careful
Surgeons should consider using additional non-absorbable sutures to close areas that may be dilated, or swollen, or areas that require additional support.
As an absorbent suture, the Damacaprone absorbable suture can temporarily function as a foreign body. Treatment of contaminated or infected wounds should follow acceptable surgical procedures.
- Discard the opened package or the forgotten stitch.
- Please do not reuse.
- Do not re-sterilize any absorbable sutures types
Prevention
- Care must be taken when handling this or other suture material to avoid handling damage. Avoid using surgical instruments such as forceps and needle holders, or avoid crimping damage.
- Damacaprone absorbable suture must stay in place for at least 7 days can cause local irritation and should be cut or removed as shown.
- In some situations, especially in orthopedic surgery, joint fixation with external support may be adopted at the surgeon’s discretion.
- If you change the shape of the needle, you may lose the needle. It is durable and does not easily bend or break. Absorbable sutures how long to dissolve is a type of quesiton only a doctor with proper education can answer.
