How To Use Suture
How to use suture is the question we have to answer when we talk about stitching. But what we have to remember here is there are so many technique and material we have to learn. If we know more about the techniques, the we can help better.
Sutures or Stitches
The procedure performed in medical methods to ensure the integrity of tissues such as damaged skin and veins and to accelerate the healing. Suture types are usually placed after a surgical operation to ensure the stability of the tissue layers.
In addition, suturing is also applied in the rupture of tissues due to excessive stretching as a result of events such as laceration. Stitches are basically in the style of separate stitches or continuous stitches.
Major Suture Types
- Interrupted stitching
It is the most preferred method for skin closure. Each suture placed is knotted separately. It is time consuming.
- Continuous suture
Starting from one end of the wound, these suture techniques are made continuously without knotting. Fast, additional resistance is advantageous, less knotted and more effective in hemostasis.
It is not used to cover the wounds on the joints. It can be opened completely when opened from somewhere, if infection develops, it cannot be opened with an incision at one point.
- Continuous subcuticular (dermal) suture
It is ideal for children or non-cooperative patients as no suture removal is required when this technique is applied with absorbable material. It is often used for cosmetic closure.
Mattress Stitch
Vertical mattress is the most preferred method. However, it causes more operations and necrosis than simple or continuous stitches.
The medical language name of the surgical procedure, which is defined as suture in the speaking language, is stitching. The suture keeps the wound closed throughout the tissue healing process.
When surgeons sew tissues, they use sewing methods similar to tailors. The sewing material used is of two types:
1, those that dissolve by themselves over time;
2, substances that maintain their existence throughout life.
The first group includes catgut, and the second group includes nylon, silk and wire.
Material Types Used in Sewing
The decision to use melting stitches depends on many factors. Melting suture methods are used in surgical wounds where the tissues heal rapidly, for example, stomach surgeries that close in a few days, as their durability decreases in a short time.
In hernia surgeries, nylon stitches that maintain their strength for years are preferred until new tissue is formed around the incision. If dissolving stitches are used, the hernia may accur.
Leather Stitches
There are many ways to combine leather. For this purpose, continuous or cut suture, dissolving or permanent materials, even meatl clips can be used.
If dissolving material is not used, nylon and silk are preferred. These are left for about a week, until the incision in the skin has gained the necessary strength. Since the skin heals easily, the stitches on the face are usually removed within a few days.
In addition, stitches left longer than necessary may cause small traces on the skin. Melting stitches are usually placed just under the skin, invisible from the outside, and continuous stitches are applied.
Will It Hurt To Remove My Stitches After Surgery
No, since the materials used today are much softer than those used in the past, they easily glide through the tissues. The thought of it, rather than the process itself, is frightening.
- Do internal stitches remain for a long time after major surgeries?
Yes, some of the ingredients used remain for life. For example, nylon does not cause adverse effects on the tissue, nor is it harmed by other factors. Even if it is relaxed, it remains present 30 years after the operation.
- Can stitches burst with coughing or force after abdominal surgery?
Today, such events are rarely encountered. Closure of a surgical wound in the abdominal area determines not external but internal sutures. This is why many surgeons make use of non-melting materials such as nylon when joining muscles.
Since the species used in the past lose their strength quickly, wounds can be opened. Nowadays, since the abdominal muscles can be stitched well with a permanent type of material, the suturing can withstand the strain created by coughing.
In addition, movements such as coughing after abdominal surgeries cause some pain, so there is no strong strain.
Arcy Suture Materials And Its Effects On Tissue Healing
Wound repair; It is a well-regulated and coordinated process that involves a series of overlapping processes such as inflammation, cell proliferation, matrix deposition, and tissue formation.
Sutures provide adequate tissue approach to prevent wound dehiscence during wound repair. An ideal suture; It must be strong, easy to use and able to create secure nodes. It should cause minimal tissue inflammation and should not support infection.
Choosing the Appropriate Suture
Although a single suture does not have all these features, choosing the appropriate suture for the wound and wound area helps to get better results. Correct suture technique is of paramount importance to achieve good cosmetic results and prevent permanent scars. It can be clearly stated that an ideal suture material will differ depending on the clinical situation to be used.
However, there are differences in physical and chemical properties of suture materials. These differences in the properties of the suture thread materials make the sutures special for clinical situations. Patient-related factors, type of surgery and tissue quality are important for deciding on a suitable suture material.
