Surgical Suture Manufacturing

From raw material selection to sterile packaged surgical sutures.

Surgical sutures are designed to close wounds and support tissue healing. Their performance depends on material choice, construction, coating, sterilization, and strict quality control.

From raw material selection to sterile packaged surgical sutures.
01

Raw Materials

Absorbable sutures may use materials such as collagen, polyglycolic acid, glycolide-lactide copolymers, or polydioxanone. Nonabsorbable sutures may use polypropylene, polyester, polyamide, PTFE, or stainless steel.

02

Suture Design

Different procedures require different suture behavior. Designers balance absorbability, knot security, tensile strength, elasticity, flexibility, and handling.

03

Clinical Application

Absorbable sutures degrade as wounds heal, while nonabsorbable sutures resist dissolution and may be removed after surface healing.

Manufacturing Process

A controlled path from polymer to sterile package.

01

Polymer Preparation

Chemicals are polymerized, pushed through a die, and discharged as small pellets.

02

Extrusion

Pellets are melted and passed through tiny openings to create individual filaments.

03

Stretching and Braiding

Filaments are stretched for strength. Depending on the product, sutures may remain monofilament or be braided/twisted.

04

Annealing and Coating

Heat, tension, and coating help control structure, handling, and performance characteristics.

05

Quality Assurance

The batch is tested for diameter, length, strength, and conformity before final assembly.

06

Needle Attachment and Sterilization

Sutures are cut, attached to needles, sealed in foil packets, and sterilized according to material requirements.
